Supplies to participate in any activity, e.g. gardening or craft

Craft! I can lose myself and minimise my health issues by doing a craft that not only helps myself, but also helps others less fortunate. I cannot stand the thought of homelessness and I don’t believe that anybody should, and moreso when it is caused by greed and selfishness of those much higher up the ladder than we are. Every year for the past 15 years I have committed to making 150 sets of beanies and mittens for the homeless. I cherish my ability to lessen my own worries in order to help keep others warm. I do suffer from social isolation and I resent the fact that packages do not take it into account. M.K.

Commentary & Discussion

Crafting and art make me who I am. There is no separating me from them. If there is one consolation to ageing, it's that I have more time for the activities that define me. But being full time carer for my husband cuts down that time, so they become more important again. But all even the most basic supplies become a drain ill afforded on a pension. So yes I believe a sum should be allowed for hobby supplies. Or are we expected to moulder away, never doing anything that is remotely pleasant? Z.L.

Art…like in drawing, painting, folk art, using different mediums, pottery, handcrafting like beading, crocheting, and last but not least short story writing, the latter very rewarding when seeing my work being published and appreciated. Membership costs to any such interests and activities groups are unfortunately excluded from being funded via the HCP program, but actual class fees, whether face to face or on line can be approved for reimbursement. Go figure!

Why this nit picking??? Of course something is better than nothing, and I’m grateful for that, but honestly, why…why…why? Is it because they believe that as we grow older we simply may not be physically nor mentally capable of attending too many classes/training sessions? Smart Alecs The funding of all the tools needed is also constantly debated! I need magnifying glasses, specially adjustable table and chair to see and reach any work I’m doing! Special cushioning to sit on to avoid pain and pressure sores. There’s so much extra needed just to accomplish a task that I didn’t need when I was younger. It’s soul destroying enough to be made to feel redundant without having to beg and grovel for everything! M.O.

Home Care Packages should support activities that increase socialisation, physical and mental health.
