Companion Pets

The Companion Animal Network Australia (Australia CAN) wants to see Government-funded pet care supports introduced as part of in-home care packages and aged care, and is calling on the public to provide their input on what pet-friendly services are needed for older people.

A brief survey to help Pet Friendly Aged Care work toward knowing the support you might require for you and your pet.

Home Care Packages should support Companion pets to help decrease social isolation, mental health issues and increase the quality of life.

"I lost my mate nearly twelve months ago. He was my everything. He was my mate, my shadow, my teddy in the night, my comfort at times when I was not travelling well, either physically or mentally. He was my reason to keep wanting to fight and live longer. He was the one being who never judged me. His love was pure and unconditional and there was never a doubt that he had my back. The day that I was forced to close the curtain in his life was the day that mine changed dramatically. I thought that I knew what loneliness and grief was about, but really, I only thought that I knew. Life is so very empty now, because, when he went he took a part of my heart, and my soul with him. I have never known what it’s like not to have a dog by my side, and as much as I have hoped that a little dog who needed to have the life, and the home that he had may come along it hasn’t happened and so I go on with the memories that break my heart and burn my soul. The cost of a pet, even rescue pets is exhorbitant and judgemental. Why are those who live in social isolation not allowed to purchase a pet through their package."

"Without the motivation that my dog provides I would not be half as mobile as I am now."

Sadly, the cost of rescue dogs is both offensive, and designed to make them unaffordable to those they deem to be financially incapable of having one. I just go on, living in hope and wishing that the issue of social isolation were bought to the forefront."

I was lucky enough up till last year to get assistance with my dog's grooming etc as I no longer can manage. It is totally cruel that this ended as I used to be able to do it myself and just because our health deteriorates and we can't, what are we meant to do with our pets - give them up?"
